Glow Plugs for Diesel Engines

Glow plugs are used in a variety of vehicles and equipment. Glow plugs are most common in diesel engines, including trucks, automotive and military vehicles. Occasionally, they are used in off-highway and agricultural equipment.

Diesel Engines

Diesel engines use glow plugs to help produce the heat needed to ignite their fuel. Fuel is ignited by the compression of air in the cylinder and combustion chamber. During cold weather, glow plugs are switched on to pre-heat the combustion chamber prior to the engine being started. Once the diesel engine is running, the glow plugs are no longer required and can be turned off.

Automobiles

Automobiles that use diesel engines can reduce fuel costs and increase mileage. Diesel engines in cars were somewhat shunned in the U.S. during the 1970s and 1980s due to poor emissions, soot and loud motors. With technological advancements, diesel engines are now burning cleaner and quieter than ever. Commercial / Off-Highway Equipment

Many large off highway and commercial equipment do not require the use of glow plugs. Because of their large size, air in the compression chamber is rarely cooled to the point where pre-heating is necessary. However, it may be necessary to pre-heat the combustion chamber on certain models.

There are several situations that pre-heating the engine may be required, including excessive cold spells.
